F-ALT10 is almost upon us! F-ALT is a fringe event organised by (mainly) educational technologists & those with an unhealthy interest in educational technology to coincide with the annual ALT conference, this year taking place in Nottingham. This is the programme page - F-ALT happens because people pitch in ideas & enthusiasm to make it happen. So go on :) We've added some place holder pages but feel free to add or edit these if they aren't what you want. We usually have a f2f planning & meeting session to kick off with, but don't feel like you have to wait. In need of inspiration? Check out the F-ALT vault fr 2009 and 2008. Don't forget to sign up for this year & let us know if yr all official like.

F-ALT is a fringe event organised to coincide with the annual Association for Learning Technology annual conference. Spurred on by the fantastic success of F-ALT 08, and F-ALT 09 we're looking forward to an even more fabulous series of unconference events. This Year ALT-C is in Nottingham!

F-ALT takes place between Monday 6th September to Thursday 9th of September. We will work hard at indicating public accessibility to slots & try and and make as many of them open as possible. The Annual Edubloggers meetup takes place on the evening of the 7th of September.

Lovely disclaimer: Although F-ALT is really lovely, we don't have any official connection to, relationship with, or endorsement of ALT or ALT-C. We don't have sponsors, budget, organisational structure, chair, committee, or mascot. We are rich in poorly conceived ideas.

F-ALT 10 will consist of a variety of sessions held in public, conference and university spaces. Delegates are encouraged to experiment with format, with slots focusing discussion and allowing participants and bystanders to experiment with an alternative conference format. Participants pick the topics they are most interested in debating and negotiate session delivery. If you have session ideas you can stick them here or in the programme (more organised). We'll work up detail as we go along. If you are coming, don't forget to signup

Programme is perhaps to grand a word for a self-organised fringe, but we do have events, dates and times, and places to hold them. And here they are, add your own, its as easy as that!

Postdigital	What does this mean? Why is it not two words? Is it just Dave making-up another term in an attempt to get keynote gigs? No, it actually has some substance to it and could be a very helpful way of framing the learning-tech discussion over the next few years. If you are sceptical about all this then you should definitely turn-up. The chances of an argument breaking out are very high. Think of this as your mental warm-up for ALT. Or can the Digital Britain agenda be seen as an opportunity to widen access not only to 21st century autos-da-fé but to a wider critically connected commons? UEL HABitat Virtual Event	The week before ALT-C, UEL School of Health and Bioscience will be launching its brand new SL island featuring virtual lab experiments, CSI scenarios, a clinic with virtual patients and much more. For F-ALT we have set up a virtual area with goody bags and fun activites, and most of the island will be available to explore. This will be a free event for anyone to drop in virtually either just before, after or during ALT-C. Here are the notes from the session. Please feel free to edit!

Helen - EduPunk: Yes it is a white, male, middle-aged thing. Our students would be ashamed of us. (Helen then had to leave to chair a session)
Steve - Steve spoilt us with his EduPunk manifesto - he threw in a presentation & finished with a poem. He argued its all about the attitude, about challenging and smashing structures. EduPunk is a minimalist, less is more, DIY approach, similar to making and distributing your own records. It's about breaking down the distance between the audience and the performers, about making things more personal & original.

Edupunk in context is against the commodification of learning. Education should be free. Down with the walled garden of institutionally approved VLE provision and up with PLEs (personal learning environments). Edupunk is about unleashing the anarchy - free, open content, open source, not constrained by commerce.

He also threw in Stephen Downes definition: "edupunk is student-centered, resourceful, teacher- or community-created rather than corporate-sourced, and underwritten by a progressive political stance." And an anonymous commentator on his post says: "I can't think of anything more punk than education. For the student, learning gives power to the individual. A society full of mindless drones trained to each do a single task doesn't really have the mental ability to rebel in meaningful ways. For the teacher, every day is an exercise in punk. You're almost completely under the control of your coordinator, your principals, your superintendents, your school board, the media. Often, "the man" passes down restrictive rules and decisions that don't seem to align with what's best for you or your students. Often, you're only equipped with sparse resources you're able to scrap together here and there."

Asher commented that Edupunk shouldn't have to be oppositional & that he wasn't here for a fight, but he objected to the lack of fanzine referencing.

Josie revealed that she had been a baby punker and was at one point committed to the Subhumanz. She wondered if Edupunk was the embarrassing dad of the e-Learning world.

Steven commented that there was a clear gender divide - all of the women round the table disliked the EduPunk label, the people defending it were all white men. He wanted to hear a woman defending the term.

Josie offered to sell out and defend EduPunk for five pounds.

Sam commented on the comodification of protest. He wondered if we weren't in a perpetual state of selling out, seeing that many of the 'free' services we use are predominantly commercial entities, that we allow our data to be brought and sold in the market place.

Graham brought up the example of the School of Everything - a service which allows people to learn and teach without the constrains of the curriculum or having to jump through key skills hoops. He wondered why we need commercial finance in order to fund these kinds of services.

Scott asked us to remember Derek Jarman's 1977 punk classic Jubilee, and ask ourselves if we are Richard O'Brian or Adam Ant.

Josie argued that the important thing about EduPunk wasn't what it was called but the disruptive and creative impulse & ah hoc organisational acivist approach that it represents.

Andy said that the whole discussion is a bit stupid. All we are doing is promoting something that's time has already passed. EduPunk died a couple of weeks ago.

More comments on appropriation & recreation of resources, A call for EduPirates which was met with a hearty round of Arrrs and YoHos.

Steve argued that do these kind of metaphors do have value, and that EduPunk as a label was much better than another acronym.

George commented that in transgression and overstepping the mark is precisely where learning takes place.

Asher admitted his kids didn't think he, personally was very cool but that the era and history of punk did hold fascination and represented something powerful & interesting to them.

Piratebay & bit torrent were cited. More Arrs and YoHos.

Graham wrapping up by commenting that the session had had a great deal of back and forth, people building on, responding and developing arguments in a way that wasn't often possible in the formal conference sessions. He then pimped the 5pm e-Portfolio session.

Back in Manchester, where we kicked off our first notorious meetup (featuring the edublog all star Scott Wilson/Stephen Downes drink off), we'll be taking over the lovely Contact Theatre for a night of drinking, partying & talking about the social web.

On the Fringe of the Digital Divide

F-ALT was a fringe event organised to coincide with the ALT-C conference at Leeds this September.

What did F-ALT08 look like?

Twemes made something of a comeback during the fringe - we were all delighted!

The Technorati search is over here and you can pick up the html to stick in to your blog posts to make sure your post shows up at the bottom of the page. Somewhat hilariously they are picking up Falco videos as part of the tag. Falco does not support or in any official way endorse F-ALT08.

Similarly, F-ALT had no official connection to, relationship with, or endorsement of ALT or ALT-C. We don't have sponsors, budget, organisational structure, chair, committee, or mascot. But we wanted a mascot. The Truck Monster.

F-ALT consisted of several short, sharp, session, held in public conference and university spaces. They were designed to focus discussion around a range of topics and allow participants and bystanders to experiment with an alternative conference format. Participants picked the topics they were interested in debated and negotiated session delivery. The majority of people who came to watch joined in, but we used a lightweight structure (named facilitator & a few speakers) to scaffold the topics.

I wonder whether some ongoing fringe activity might be interesting for the wider group/network/community (circle your preferred term or add another) that self-identifies as learning technologists, elearning specialist/practitioner, etc. wrt ALT? ALT has an increasingly heavy committee structure, bureaucracy, payroll, events calendar, QA mechanisms, etc. The processes of institutionalisation seem to be creating, to some extent, an ALT for ALT's sake.

There could be a F-ALT line at any formal LT conference: F-ALT lines at OnlineEduca, F-ALT lines at CAL, F-ALT lines at EdMedia, etc

I don't know whether this would piss off the secretariat. But: ALT, wtf?

Should it be renamed 'FALT' (fault) to make it more widely applicable) I think there is a strong FALT contingency at most of the big conferences and that informal discussions in bars organized via this wiki and twitter could work well at any number of events? (DW)

(Thanks George for pointing out this page, thanks Dave for postng all this) We were discussing this on Twitter for Handheld and mLearn this year. Naming convention ideas were starting to get silly, so FALT & falt lines ('lines', I presume, are the actual sessions) seem as good as any to me. Take F to be fringe (or from wtf :) ), and ALT to be 'alternative'.

Next question - can we carry on using this space to communicate & plot? :-) (GW)

Wouldn't it make more sense to have F-Online Educa F-CAL, etc, as in Fringe- Conference? Unless you are trying to create a brand, in which case including ALT could quite reasonably piss off ALT. (Frances Bell)

I don't know. There is an alt key on my keyboard and there is a long tradition of alternative newsgroups that preceded the Association for LT. That said, I wouldn't want to create a brand (GR)

I'd taken 'alt' to have moved beyond 'ALT' and back to its original 'meaning':
"Alt, an alternative identity on the internet. The creation of an alternative account for any reason including for use as a Sockpuppet. This term is commonly used in, for example, Newgrounds.com." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alt

I would hate this to be 'branded' as such. That implies corporate ownership, logos, mission statements...
(and we don't want to turn into Golgafrinchans :o) )

But I take your point Frances re keeping the context of the particular conference to the fore.

Next week sees mLearn - I'm not at that, but is anyone planning fringe happenings (James? :) )? And the week after is HandheldLearning (which I am attending). I would imagine that falt lines would cross from one to the other, with discussions ongoing. Perhaps we should worry less, at the moment, about what it is called and instead concentrate on possible wtf topics? (kt)

ARSEPOO: The HELMET project. This JISC-funded project is my nomination for the award. Not only does the project name sound a bit rude and a bit silly, it appears to be completely unaware of this.

Who uses their phone for making phone calls? - With the growth of smartphones, SMS, mobile applications, does anyone actually use their phones for making phone calls. Are there learning activities we can design which use the phone as a phone?
